What is Wisdom?

 

Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement; it is the quality of being ‘wise.’

 

Why is Seeking Wisdom Important?

 

Wisdom provides us with insight, and knowledge of what is true and right, and the ability to make a just judgement as to how to behave. Wisdom provides us the ability to utilise our knowledge and understanding to be ‘creative.’ When we seek wisdom, we become open to spiritual growth and development. The more we grow spiritually, the better we feel emotionally, mentally and physically. We are less likely to invest directly into materialistic wealth and more likely to invest in God, and in helping others- and see more value in moral character and virtues of loving kindness and truth: This enables us to live more peaceful and happier lives within ourselves and our communities. 

 

How can Wisdom help us?

Wisdom enables us to discern right from wrong, guides us through challenges, and enhances creativity. It allows us to reflect, reason, adapt, learn, and improve relationships, leading to sensible decisions and genuine peace. A wise person transforms negatives into positives, excels in their career, and maintains life balance. Wisdom fosters personal growth, cultivating kindness, modesty, compassion, and other virtues, strengthening relationships and achieving inner peace. As vessels of light, wise individuals spread truth, love, and fairness, turning enemies into friends and achieving peace and success.

How can our Wisdom help others?

 

How wonderful it is to be in the presence of a wise individual with strong moral character, someone who is fair, just, kind, compassionate, loving, merciful, forgiving, gentle, humble, honest, grateful, and diligent. Such a person seems to illuminate our lives, and we cherish their company—their presence brings tranquility and happiness, creating a soothing atmosphere around them. When they speak, their words are kind and do not offend or incite hostility or hatred. We trust their words and actions because we know they stem from good intentions and love…

 

Imagine being surrounded by many wise individuals who greet each other with words of peace, speak kindly to ease our troubles, listen to us, offer advice, and help guide us—like beacons in the darkness, helping us see our paths and guiding us on our journeys…

 

The wiser we become, the more we can assist others. The better we are at judging fairly and discerning right from wrong, the better leaders we can be, aiding others and sharing our knowledge and understanding in justice, truth, and kindness. Wisdom is like a light shining in the darkness, guiding us on our paths and helping others on their journeys. Wisdom inspires—it encourages others to do good, improve themselves, and shine their own light to find their way. A wise person with good moral character and the ability to discern right from wrong can be excellent role models for their communities, and the more of us who are wise, the more harmonious our communities will become.

How can we become Wiser?

 

The journey to wisdom begins with the desire to pursue it. Recognizing the value of seeking wisdom helps us prioritize it over material wealth. Wisdom reveals the transient nature of materialism and guides us through difficult situations. When paired with humility and nurtured, wisdom can expand, empowering us to thrive in any circumstance by God's grace. Through life experiences, the intention to grow, reflection, and divine guidance, one can pursue wisdom.

 

Ways to pursue wisdom:

Seeking God:

 

Reading sacred texts for insights from prophets and messengers, such as the Torah, Old Testament, Jesus' parables, Psalms of David, Proverbs of Solomon, and the Quran, offers wisdom for those exploring God's creation. God, the source of all knowledge and wisdom, guides through His signs within and around us. By seeking His guidance and provision, and being open to learning, He elevates us to greater wisdom and understanding.

 

Humility:

 

Arrogance and pride halt spiritual growth. The more humble we are about our knowledge, the more open we become to new insights. Humility allows us to learn from mistakes and take responsibility, making it essential for acquiring wisdom. As we grow wiser, we realize how much we still have to learn.

Seeking knowledge:

 

Engaging with books, films, and talks, whether factual or fictional, enhances our understanding of the world and enriches our wisdom. Pursuing truth, love, and kindness complements the quest for wisdom and knowledge. Reflecting on acquired knowledge and applying it through experience is crucial.

Seeking Truth:

 

Truth and wisdom are intertwined. A wise person discerns truth from falsehood, and truthfulness fosters wisdom. Being truthful in our pursuit of wisdom aligns our intentions, speech, and actions, aiding our journey. Dishonesty can obscure self-awareness, purpose, and moral judgment, diminishing one's worthiness to attain and retain wisdom.

Meditation and Prayer:

 

Believers in a Creator seek His guidance for increased knowledge and wisdom. Remembering God and praying for insight and truth strengthens our relationship with Him. This belief in divine assistance opens our hearts to perceive beyond physical senses. Regular prayer and meditation help us avoid worldly distractions, fostering reflection and humility.

 

Mindfulness:

 

Engaging our senses and emotions mindfully enhances our potential for reflection and growth.

 

Reflection:

 

Reflecting on our words, actions, and surroundings, while staying mindful, encourages learning and wisdom.

 

Questioning:

 

Curiosity through questioning—asking why, how, where, what—facilitates the pursuit of truth and the ability to distinguish right from wrong. This quest for truth nurtures wisdom.

 

Reason:

 

Reasoning and logic promote fairness and justice, enabling us to treat others as we wish to be treated. They help discern truth from falsehood and navigate conflicting information.

 

Loving kindness:

 

Compassion and love open us to wisdom. Treating others as we wish to be treated fosters listening, reduces judgment, and promotes forgiveness, enhancing learning opportunities. Wisdom diminishes greed, encouraging sharing with the less fortunate.

 

Experience:

 

Wisdom often accompanies age due to accumulated experiences. Travel and diverse experiences offer learning opportunities. Every moment is an experience, whether positive or negative, providing lessons for growth. Sharing wisdom helps others on their journeys. Learning from relationships, hardships, and suffering transforms negative experiences into wisdom. Understanding opposites, like greed and kindness or grief and joy, helps us balance life and empathize with others.

'Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man.' Ecclesiastes 9:15

All this also comes from the LORD Almighty, whose plan is wonderful, whose wisdom is magnificent. Isaiah 28:29

“Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.” Isaiah 29:14

'Concerning Edom: This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent?Has their wisdom decayed?”' Jeremiah 49:7

‘To Solomon We inspired the (right) understanding of the matter: to each (of them) We gave Judgment and Knowledge; it was Our power that made the hills and the birds celebrate Our praises, with David: it was We Who did (all these things)’. Quran 21:79

 

‘You shall not accept any information, unless you verify it for yourself. I have given you the hearings, the eyesight, and the brain and you are responsible for using them. You shall not walk proudly on earth-you cannot bore through the earth, nor can you be as tall as the mountains. All bad behaviour is condemned by your Lord. THIS IS SOME OF THE WISDOM inspired to you by your Lord. You shall not set up another god beside God, lest you end up in Gehena, blamed and defeated.’ Quran 17:36-39
